You're So Special, Or Are You?

that they were being hoodwinked by a family of Canadians. Women were winking at me as I trundled down the road atop the shiny red engine, and trust me, they don't that do that every day here in Canada, unless they have something in their eye or are being tazered.
But I've left the textual track that I was leading you down. The point that I have been so slovenly trying to make is that at Disney they make you feel special. I can't think of any MMOGs currently on the market that in still in the player that they are exceptional, noteworthy, remarkable or even uncommon. If one of the current MMOGs fixed in you the feeling that you were significant, even if it was only in a virtual world, you wouldn't be reading this, you'd be playing the game.
Everquest once held that ability squarely in its binary hands. Players felt wonder, awe, fear and many if not all felt important even though they were the cookie cutter replica of everyone else who happened to choose the same class.
With reduced risk (corpse retrieval, death penalties) came reduced rewards. Worlds (Norrath in EQLive) became games (Norrath in EQ2). With reduced rewards came a reduced feeling of worth, a reduced feeling of value, a reduced feeling of significance. Many players asked for a more casual game experience, developers delivered, World of Warcraft is a tremendous success, but in the end, something that was integral to making the games special was lost.
Am I conjuring up problems that aren't really there or is something missing, something that gives you a feeling of significance within the current crop...

accurate simplification of most RPGs' plotlines. Players are told from an early stage that they must fight the bad guy. They then spend the whole game killing, maiming and slaughtering people so they can prepare to fight that enemy. This bad guy waits at the bottom of a dungeon for the players to come kill them. At the end of the day, the body count is almost always much higher on the players' side of things than the bad guy's. In this, games diverge from traditional forms of storytelling, in which great lengths are taken to show how the bad guy truly does deserve to meet the end of the hero's blade.

Tabula Rasa reverses this trend through, among other tactics, active placement of enemies in the world. It is not perfect, there are still apparent "spawn zones" where players can find specific creatures and enemies, but generally the enemies fe...

Is it still OK to wish someone "Merry Christmas"?
Right off the bat, there's Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice and who knows what else. For gamers, particularly MMO players, the list gets even longer. Winter Veil, Frostfell, Yuletide, Life Day... the list goes on and on.
So, to help players get a handle on their holiday gaming, here's a look at a few of the more major happening...
